What is CBD?
Like you, I once wondered What is CBD? I soon found out that is actually an acronym for Cannabidiol. And what is that?? Well, it is one of the chemical substances known as cannabinoids, and it is found in the cannabis plant.
It is a well known fact that the plant kingdom has many plants with healing properties. There are Aloe Vera, Lavender, Chamomile, and many others. The cannabis plant is simply one of them that we now know has powerful healing abilities.
CBD is the second most abundant compound in cannabis. It represents up to 40% of its extracts. The first is tetrahydrocannabinol or THC.
What Are The Different Types of Cannabis?
Simply put:
- Cannabis grown to high levels of THC is marijuana.
- Cannabis grown with less than 0.03% THC and high levels of CBD is hemp.
- Legal term for hemp grown to produce CBD oil is called industrial hemp.
At CBD BioCare, the cannabinoids are extracted from the whole plant. Most of the extraction is from the leaves and flowers. The product is called Full Spectrum CBD Hemp Oil.
* Note: Any oil extracted from marijuana plants are illegal in most states.
What Are The Types of Cannabis Oils In The Marketplace?
- Hemp oil – oil derived from hemp seed oil. There are no THC or CBD present
- Marijuana oil – extracted from marijuana with high THC. This is illegal in most states
- THC oil – extracted from marijuana with high THC. This is illegal in most states
- Cannabis oil – extracted from marijuana with high THC. This is illegal in most states
- CBD oil – a collective term for oils made from hemp. This contains less than 0.03% THC and high levels of CBD
What Are The Benefits of CBD?
Reduce Inflammation
Research has found that cannabinoids are the active molecules found in Cannabis that has potent anti-inflammatory activities in many animal models. The inflammatory diseases include rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, liver inflammation, brain injury, neurological degeneration, and multiple sclerosis. All these, from studies, have shown improvement with CBD use.
Bone Growth
At Tel Aviv University, Dr Yankel Gabet has researched on rodents with broken limbs. He found that they heal much faster when treated with non-psychoactive CBD. He reported, “We found CBD alone to be sufficiently effective in enhancing fracture healing. Other studies have shown CBD to be a safe medicinal agent, which leads us to believe we should continue this line of study in clinical trials to assess its usefulness in improving human fracture healing.”
Anxiety Relief
While there is no real proof, there have been much research that supports the claim that cannabinoids can provide effective relief to people experiencing spells of anxiety and stress. A 2013 paper published in the International Neuro-psychopharmacology Journal revealed that the exact mechanism of CBD’s action was unclear, but the findings do support the claim that CBD is anxiolytic in effect. This made CBD worthy of further study as it has been found to be an anti-stress agent.
Pain Reliever
There have been many researches worldwide that support this claim of CBD as an effective painkiller. A study on the efficacy of CBD by Ethan Russo in 2008 for the Therapeutic Clinical Risk Management Journal (Cannabinoids in the Management of Difficult to Treat Pain) found that:
- Cannabinoids painkillers are generally well tolerated in clinical trials observed
- Side effects are few and manageable
- Pharmacological use for treatment of pain shows great promise
- CBD in combination with opioid therapy is a very promising efficacious treatment
Muscles Spasms and Seizures
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) allowed epilepsy centers to prescribe and study CBD for compassionate use. Results were as follows:
- Seizures overall decreased by an average of 54%
- DS seizures decreased by 63% decrease over 3 months
- Improvements in seizure issues lasted six months while on medication
- Atonic seizures decreased by 66.7% on average
- 14 people withdrew from the study because it was not effective for them
Blood Sugar Levels
The discoverer of Cannabidiol (CBD), Dr Raphael Mechoulam, suggested that it could be used to manage diabetes, atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease. Subsequent studies and trials at the University of Tel Aviv has substantial evidence to support this hypothesis.
Study highights:
- Rats with infarcts (areas of dead tissue) due to failure of blood supply were reduced by 30% when given CBD
- Chronic inflammation is associated with insulin resistance – type 2 diabetes. CBD reduces inflammation as well as insulin resistance
- Sugar metabolism and heart function appear to benefit from CBD anti-inflammatory properties
- Unlike insulin and other existing medications for diabetes, in some cases, CBD might suppress, reverse and cure the disease
More Benefit On The Way
Research is still ongoing today. And more proof is found that CBD has tremendous medical value. There are studies conducted now for the following:
- Epilepsy
- Cancer
- Depression
- Anxiety
- Psychotic Disorders
- Chronic Pain
- Diabetes
And if the above is not enough to convince you, here is a little Abstract Summary of a patent that the Federal Government owns (US Patent 06630507)
Cannabinoids as antioxidants and neuroprotectants
US 6630507 B1
ABSTRACT
Cannabinoids have been found to have antioxidant properties, unrelated to NMDA receptor antagonism. This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. The cannabinoids are found to have particular application as neuroprotectants, for example in limiting neurological damage following ischemic insults, such as stroke and trauma, or in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease and HIV dementia. Nonpsychoactive cannabinoids, such as cannabidiol, are particularly advantageous to use because they avoid toxicity that is encountered with psychoactive cannabinoids at high doses useful in the method of the present invention. A particular disclosed class of cannabinoids useful as neuroprotective antioxidants is formula (I) wherein the R group is independently selected from the group consisting of H, CH3, and COCH3.

Timotheus
Hi. I have hypothyroidism and also Trigeminal Neuralgia. I take a large dose of anti-convulsant for the latter to control it. What do studies show about using CBD oil for either of these conditions?
Thanks for leaving a comment and I want to apologize for not responding sooner. I actually took your question and posted it to our group of experts to get more information regarding your question of hypothyroidism and Trigeminal Neuropathic. What I found as far as hypothyroidism is with some, it is able to help and some have not had success getting it under control with using CBD. With Trigeminal Neuropathic all the information that I gathered leads to the understanding that CBD works with the CB1 and CB2 receptors, therefore, cannabinoids may be a useful in a therapeutic approach in clinical management for trigeminal neuropathic pain disorders. I would definitely give it a shot and see how it works for you. Here is a direct link for the brand we believe in at Naturally Organic CBD. If you have any other questions please let us know.
Thanks Tim, for writing this great post.
We need to show people the difference between CBD and marijuana. There is still so much misinformation out there, and it’s stopping people from experiencing it’s healing benefits.
Thanks again,
Suzanne
Hi Suzanne! Thanks for your comment. Apologies for the late reply. I had been very busy with family matters.
You are right. There is a need to educate people that CBD is not marijuana, not addictive. With people understanding this, more can benefit from its great healing gift. 🙂
Hello Tim,
This is a well written post that clears the confusion about CBD and Marijuana. I know a lot of people have read stories about the benefits of medical Marijuana. It can get confusing when they hear that CBD has the benefits of Marijuana without the high.
Deep down they think CBD must be some form of Marijuana. They have no idea what the difference is between THC and CBD—to them it’s just a different way of talking about the same thing. You do an excellent job of spelling out the major differences between THC and CBD.
I think this will allow people to try CBD with confidence that they are not doing something to harm them but instead are helping themselves heal and become healthier.
Hi Thabo. Thank you for the kind praise. I am glad my article will help people know the differences between CBD and Marijuana. I think maybe the name CBD has letters that are similar to Cannabis that may cause the confusion and concern upon first impression. If only it was named a little different, it may help? Just maybe.
Nevertheless, this is why articles like my article are here to help people know the differences. And hopefully they will give CBD a try.
I started using CBD oil a few weeks ago and already I can tell a difference in my health. My PTSD seems better controlled, my stomach is no longer hurting, and I am seeing some improvement in my arthritis. This product works!! I will highly recommend it, thanks for sharing this very informative article!
Hi Brenda. Thanks for your testimonial and recommendation. I truly hope more people will discover this powerful healing gift from Mother Nature, and try CBD Oil.
Hello Timotheus,
CBD oil seems to be a wonder remedy for numerous diseases and pains. I am doing research about this oil and I’m grateful to have found your very informative post. I have to admit that I am sceptic as the oil is made out of the hemp plant that is known to be used for producing an addictive drug. After having read your article, I understand that CBD oil only contains a tiny percentage of the addictive making substance and therefore is not classified to be a drug. The Abstract Summary of the US patent underlines the health benefits, which is very reassuring.
Pernilla
Hi Pernilla. Glad my article helped clarify things for you. I know what you mean. I, too, was skeptical at first. But after much research, I realize this is a good and powerful healing gift from Mother Nature. I hope people will buy CBD Oil and give it a try.
Hello Tim,
Many people are confused about CBD and would mistake it as cannabis. You have explained it very well here. I have known a few friends who are CBD users and it worked for them, helping them to live pain-free.
I am sure your article will be able to change people’s perception of CBD.
Best wishes,
Sharon
Hi Sharon,

Thanks Tim, this is really good information on CBD Oil and some of its benefits. I have been going through a stressful time right now with the loss of a close family member. As a CBD Oil user it has really helped me cope with all the stressors that come at times like these.
You’re welcome, Dena. My condolences for the loss of your close family member. I am glad CBD Oil helped.
Please take care.
Awesome post on CBD, you gave me a much better idea what CBD is and why I should consider purchasing this product. I was wondering if this was beneficial for autoimmune, and do you think this would interfere with any medications people might be taking?
Thank You
Hi Jeff! Thanks! Glad you like this post. We should all purchase this product. It is really good!
In my article, the extract from the FDA patent stated “This new found property makes cannabinoids useful in the treatment and prophylaxis of wide variety of oxidation associated diseases, such as ischemic, age-related, inflammatory and autoimmune diseases.”
Just to be safe, I would recommend speaking to your doctor about this, and also ask about any interference with any medications. After all, your doctor is the best person to know since he would know what medicine you are taking.
Hope this helps?
Great article about a fairly new product. We’re still learning about CBD Oil and its benefits. Good review with a direct offer to buy, so people can try the oil. Thanks for posting. Ted
